What is it that makes a concert an inspiring experience for the listener?
This was the initial question in the process of planning this debut CD of the IVORY & REED. Obviously there are several possible ways towards this goal but the most appealing one for this project seemed to be offering a broad versatility in musical styles and thereby different ways of expression in a concert program setting. The result is a multifaceted journey from Schumann’s songlike ‘Romances’ through the neo-Baroque Hindemith sonata to the late-romantic virtuoso piece by Desenclos up to the epic violin sonata by Franck. To hear traditional repertoire like Schumann or Franck in this instrumental combination might seem far-fetched at first but piano and saxophone turn out to be great partners not only for original repertoire but also in casting new light on all-too-known pieces–the two timbres compliment each other exceptionally well and provide an ear-opening experience.

Ivory & Reed

German pianist Camilla Köhnken from Bonn and Spanish saxophonist Pedro Pablo Cámara Toldos from Toledo got to know each other in 2012 being master students at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel, Switzerland. Both lovers of chamber music, they decided to work on the repertoire for this formation in a new way: despite being performed very often these pieces have rarely been played in a truly collaborative way. So they started out by working on the key pieces of the original repertoire but soon went further into playing adaptations of great composers like Bach, Schumann, Franck, and Bartók under the tutelage of Claudio Martínez Mehner, Ferenc Rados, and Sergio Azzolini. They have played many recitals in Spain, Germany and Switzerland with differents programs, which were met with great interest and enthusiasm. They won several prestigious awards including the third prize of the “Orpheus Chamber Music Competition” in Switzerland, and the first prices in “Kiefer Hablitzel Stigtung Musikpreise 2014” in Bern and “Fondation Nicati” in Lausanne. Also individually they lead active careers as soloists, taking part in numerous festivals like the Verbier Academy and Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, the Darmstadt Ferienkurse, the International Summer Academy in Salzburg, the Encuentro y Academia de Música de Santander, the Impuls Academy Graz, or the Infektion! Festival Berlin. They played concerts in halls like Weill Hall/Carnegie Hall (New York), Teatro La Fenice (Venice), Auditorio Nacional Madrid, KKL Luzern and Staatsoper Berlin. Pedro Pablo is BOG Prize 2015 (Basler Orchester Gesellschaft) of Hochschule für Musik of Basilea.
